Profile:
Deborah is an associate lawyer with ATAC Law. She has represented clients at tribunals and courts in Ontario and British Columbia, including the Ontario Benefits Tribunal, BC RTB, BC HRT, and BC Provincial Court.
Deborah comes with extensive litigation experience. At law school, she represented Osgoode internationally at appellate competitions, including the Oxford Price Media Law Moot and the International Criminal Court Moot. She was also an oralist in the Hicks Morley Moot and Lerners LLP Cup Moot.
In the real world, Deborah has experience advocating before judges and masters in creditors’ remedies, criminal law, and civil litigation. She is also experienced in real estate, insurance, immigration, and family law. In Ontario, Deborah participated in the Community & Legal Aid Service Programme and represented clients at Parkdale Community Legal Services. While in Ontario, she travelled to South Africa where she worked at a commercial law firm and a disability rights organization.
In BC, Deborah articled at UBC’s Law Students’ Legal Advice Program, where she successfully represented clients at peace bond hearings, payment hearings, application hearings, and routine court appearances. She quickly became a valuable resource to the Program. During her articles, Deborah went on secondment at Cote & Evans Trial Lawyers where she contributed to discoveries, agreements, and trial preparation.
While a litigator at heart, Deborah will advocate for you beyond the courtroom – she has experience in mediation, negotiation, contract drafting, and real estate conveyancing.
Deborah is a go-getter. She does not wait for an opportunity to present itself; she searches for it. Deborah applies this same strategy when advocating for you. She comes prepared with various solutions to your legal problem. Deborah is ready to partner with you.
Recent Dispute Resolution Experience:
Most recently, Deborah acted as counsel in a buy out of shares in a private construction company that was structured in a tax-advantageous manner for the client.
Deborah’s involvement in recent construction litigation cases includes acting for a high-end residential builder in actions for unpaid draws on multiple projects; acting for material suppliers for unpaid invoices on large commercial projects and on large infrastructure projects; acting for subcontractors in defending construction defect claims; placing liens on complex project lands such as pipelines and airspace parcels; and acting for commercial real estate owners in dealing with and securing builders lien claims.
Deborah also acts for a publicly traded company listed on the TSX exchange in relation to construction and lien related claims.
In a recent administrative law proceeding, Deborah assisted a creditor to obtain a favourable payment schedule for a Residential Tenancy judgement.
In recent criminal proceedings, Deborah successfully defended a person charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm resulting in all criminal charges being dropped.
